Abstract

Underwater pipes are one of the important parts of infrastructure development in marine areas. Pipes can be used to distribute oil, gas, and other necessities from one location to another. However, the use of pipes in the marine environment has a risk of damage, one of which is corrosion. Seawater containing salt and constantly changing environmental conditions can accelerate corrosion of pipe materials. If not handled properly, corrosion can cause thinning of the pipe walls, leaks, and even disrupt the distribution process. Therefore, efforts are needed to reduce these risks through the selection of suitable materials, the use of protective coatings, periodic inspections, and monitoring of pipeline conditions. This article discusses the causes and risks of corrosion in underwater pipes as well as some efforts that can be made to maintain the condition and service life of pipes.
